Urology Anatomy and Function
Adrenals - paired organ sitting atop the kidneys. Their function is to
provide adrenaline (norepinephrine), steroid (cortisol), and mineralocorticoid (aldosterone).
The function to control the bodies response to stressors. Common urologic
conditions include: adrenal cancer.
Kidneys - paired organ sitting deep in the back . Their function is to filter
the bodies products of metabolism by making urine. They tightly regulate
blood pressure electrolytes, acid-base status, and red blood cell production.
Common urologic conditions include: kidney stones, kidney cancer, renal cysts.
Ureters - paired tubular organs which make up part of the urinary collecting
system. Their function is to deliver urine from the kidneys to the bladder.
Common urologic conditions include: strictures (scarring), and UPJ obstruction
(congenital scarring)
Bladder - a hollow organ sitting in the pelvis. It's function is to
accommodate increasing volumes of urine between voids, and empty on request.
common urologic conditions include: urinary tract infections, interstitial
cystitis, bladder cancer, neurogenic bladder (nonfunctioning)
Prostate - a small gland sitting deep in the pelvis. It surrounds the urethra as
it leaves the bladder. Its function is to add preservation chemicals to the the
make-up of semen. This organ is not present in the female. Common urologic
conditions include: prostate cancer, BPH (benign enlargement), prostatitis
Urethra - a tube which delivers the urine from the bladder, through the
penis, and to the exterior. This organ is present in the female, although it is
considerably shorter. Common urologic conditions include: strictures (scars)
Penis - The male sexual organ.
Through a complex interaction between mind and body, blood flow is regulated to
produce erections, and detumescence. Obviously, this organ is not present in the
female. Common urologic conditions include: erectile dysfunction, peyronie's
disease (bends)
Testicles - paired round organs sitting in the scrotum. Their function is the
production of the male hormone, (testosterone), and production of sperm. These
organ is not present in the female. Common urologic conditions include:
testicular cancer, and infertility
Epididymis - paired coiled tubes which deliver the sperm from the testicles
to the urethra via the vas tubes. These organ is not present in the female.
Common urologic conditions include: epididymitis (infection), spermatocele
(cyst)
